“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.”
(An-Nahl: 125)
The verse of Holy Quran above is one of the foundation of establishment of SMILY, SSE Muslim Family. In this challenging era, people consider spiritual needs as primary needs. So do students of Sampoerna School of Education, who live in megapolitanian city. Knowledge of religion, as a part of spiritual needs, has a big role in constructing people’s characteristics. Moreover, as high-quality teacher candidates, SSE students are not only expected to be good in academic field, but also to understand their religion well as their guidance in guiding their students later.
As the guidance from Allah stated in the verse, SMILY wants to invite them in exploring Islam in a way that is not extreme, but friendly and close to their daily life. By doing this, we hope we can apply 9 core values in our life, such as excellence, respect and inclusiveness.

SMILY Agendas
Official announcement of SMILY
Actually, SMILY has been established since February 2010 but was officially announced in April 15, 2010. In the meeting, the basic foundation of SMILY establishment was explained as well as the vision, the mission, its structure, and the plan of programs will be done by SMILY in its first period.
The meeting was attended by Muslim students of SSE, Ms Haryani as the representative of Students and Alumni Affair, Mr Raynold Bachtiar Hutabarat as one of staff of SSE, and Mr Imam Malik as advisor of SMILY. In his speech, Mr Imam Malik invited all SMILY members to be Muslim Ambassador who will give positive impression about Islam to every people. If people see you behave in good way as a Muslim, they will be more interested in learning about Islam. Therefore we should prepare ourselves with adequate knowledge about our religion.
Watching Movie “My Name is Khan” (as a cooperation with Movie Club SSE)
we’re aware that the way to spread out information about our religion (dakwah) should be suited with the target itself. That’s why we choose movie as one of dakwah’s tools in order to be more understandable by SSE students. “My Name is Khan” was chosen since it has a lot of moral values that could be applied in our daily life, especially about inter-religion tolerance.
This movie has successfully raise up a sensitive issue, which is diversity of religion, into an interesting and qualified theme to be discussed. Therefore, in the end of the agenda in May 15, 2010, we invited students to discuss the movie from several points of view. The publication of this event can be seen in this page.
Pudding Party
One of departments in SMILY, Woman Affair Department, held an event titled “Pudding Party” in the house of one of SMILY members. In that girl-only event, they talked about problems that are often faced by girl students closely and friendly; of course with the pudding as the dessert. There was also a short seminar about “Halal Cosmetics and Pharmacy Product in Indonesia” that was delivered by one of the members, Anais Anais.
Fade to White
There was something unusual happened in SSE in December 29, 2010; everybody wore white dress. No, that’s not a part of new student orientation. On that day, the big family of SSE gathered in “Fade to White” event. “Fade to White” is a halalbihahal event that was organized by SMILY. The name itself symbolizes re-cleaned heart and soul of people who has fasted in month Ramadhan.
Since one of the objectives of this event is to strengthen the sense of belonging among big family of SSE, SMILY invited all students, the lecturers and staff of SSE as well. Dean of SSE, Prof. Paulina Pannen, opened the event with her speech, continued by “Saman” performance by SSE dance club, Tatra Abhirama. Afterwards, a representative of the committee introduced GRESS (Greet, Smile, and Salam), a little movement that is proposed to be done when we meet each other o the street. It may be a very simple movement, but it’s hoped that it can make us closer.
After tausiyah that was delivered by ustadz Dede Baharsyah excitingly, some attendees touched people’s heart by confessing their mistakes and ask for apologize to people they did mistake to. That touchy moment leaded into the main agenda: a mass shaking hand as a symbol of forgiving. After forgiving each other, all attendee enjoyed food and beverages in a friendly and intimate atmosphere. Everybody tried to mingle. What made “Fade to White” more interesting was surprise from Sampoerna Christian Community. They gave a song and gifts to SMILY. It showed that SSE family has high tolerance and we can live together in harmony. Together We make a Difference!

Astroliday
Alhamdulillah, praise to Allah swt, the Creator and the Guard of Universe. Because of His grace, SMILY could have held this workshop on January 17, 2011, after being cancelled for several times. Although not all students attended Astroliday—Astronomy workshop after holiday—the goal was achieved. The participants’ spiritual awareness raised; they became aware that their existence is nothing compares to the galaxy, moreover the Creator of all universe. Their knowledge also expands; they know the difference between astronomy and astrology, which have the same subject to observe (stars) but the law is different: astrology is banned to be learned in Islam, while we are encouraged to explore the other astro since it can help Muslim in worship. Some of the applications of astronomy in worship were explored at the workshop, defining time to pray (sholat) 5 times a day and defining the direction of qibla—the direction where Muslim face when praying.
The recitation of Surah Yasin: 36-40 from Quran that explains the existence of universe opened the workshop, continued with speeches from Suwandi as Person in Charge (PIC) of the event and Mr. Imam Malik as the guide of SMILY. Afterwards, Mr Hendra Setyanto, the speaker explained the material about “AstronomyataGlance”
and “Qiblalocator: how to define the direction of qibla”. He is an alumnus of Tebuireng Islamic School and an astronomy scholar from ITB, who recently become Public visit coordination of Bosscha observatory. He delivered the material excitingly by using recent technology that the participants felt that they were brought into outer-space. More detail can be seen in this page (another page of SMILY). The last agenda—and maybe the favorite agenda for most attendee, was the sky observation using telescope. Unfortunately, the bad weather disable them to observe stars and other astronomic objects, except the moon and Jupiter.
Monthly Taklim
As SMILY’s commitment to expand students’ knowledge about Islam, the department of education in SMILY (tarbiyah division) organizes a short learning session, which is called taklim. The sessions are going to be held once a month, where in each session, students will not only listen speech, but to try doing some simulation of practical thing related to worship, e.g. counting zakat. The first session had been held in December 13, 2010 under the theme Muharram: an improvement moment. There were two speakers: Anais, a student who asked the attendee to re-remember the great events in Islamic history that happened in Muharram and the lesson can be learnt from those events. Another speaker, Mr Imam Malik invited them to improve their selves to be better person by applying 7 habits that are adapted from Stephen R. Covey.
Provision of worship equipments in campus mosque
Campus mosque can be a symbol/representation of SMILY. Therefore, we try to keep it. We realize that we haven’t kept it maximally, but we have started to do that by washing mukena (woman dress for praying) and providing supporting equipments for worship, such as wooden thong used for ablution.
FYI, those foot wears are not bought for decoration only. Please, wear those unique thongs when you want to take ablution for the sake of the cleanliness of our mosque, since we all know that our mosque stands next to rest room.
